SkyTrain Operations Control Centre 2

Burnaby, British Columbia

In association with Stantec and Hatch

Designed to support the ongoing expansion of the SkyTrain transit network, Operations Control Centre 2 (OCC2) is a state of the art high-security facility that synthesizes complex technical and site planning constraints in a strikingly simple and coherent architectural gesture.

The building’s distinct elliptical plan responds to unique setback requirements, optimizing a small and irregular buildable zone. The four-storey, 5,400 m² structure houses a double-height control room at its centre, designed with curved display walls on two sides. The control room is overlooked by command and training spaces as well as a glazed perimeter corridor, providing ample daylight and connection to the outdoors for the staff who occupy the control room 24 hours a day. The ground floor contains a data centre with fully redundant systems for uninterrupted facility operation.

A canyon-like lobby connects all levels and offers employees views of the adjacent train yard. On the exterior, an irregular grid of glazed openings punctuate the building’s brushed stainless-steel skin, giving passersby intriguing glimpses into what would conventionally be an opaque structure.
