SkyTrain Operations and Maintenance Centre 4
Coquitlam, British Columbia
In association with Stantec and Hatch
With the ongoing expansion of TransLink’s SkyTrain network, Operations and Maintenance Centre 4 (OMC4) will accommodate increased maintenance, repair, and cleaning demands for trains and guideway infrastructure. The facility features a large rail yard with three primary buildings and a Propulsion Power Substation (PPSS). The Vehicle Maintenance Shop 4 (VMS4) includes three 200-meter train repair bays and 10,500 square meters of storage, office, and staff amenities. The Vehicle Cleaning and Inspection Facility (VCIF3) provides 2,700 square meters for daily cleaning and inspections, combined with a covered wash bay, while Maintenance Shop 3 (MS3) offers 3,730 square meters for equipment storage, offices, and 580 square meters of outdoor workspace.
All three buildings require cost-effective industrial architecture to be integrated with a variety of engineered systems, including bridge and gantry cranes, suspended catwalks, a blow-down booth for rail grinding equipment, maintenance pits, and an automated wash system. The design approach of these vast steel-frame buildings relies on off the shelf cladding solutions including corrugated metal siding and ground-face concrete block, arranged in simple, elegant compositions.
